About the nuclear threat

Helanny Torres

The world faces a critical menace from the nuclear weapons at the present time. Nuclear powers can figth this threat. The ideal way to do this is eliminating nuclear arsenals. A step toward this is reducing nuclear proliferation; however, there is the fear of terrorists producing these weapons. This tendency has been aggravated by regional conflicts, provoking the usual malaise in the international community. There are extensive efforts to avoid the nuclear risk. A good example is the South Africa, which voluntarily disarmed in the 1990s.

The results of these efforts have helped to combat widespread nuclear proliferation. Another achievement is the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT). This Agreement is one successful international accords in history. Its members are more than 180 countries; this treaty is essential for efforts to nonproliferation. The NPT endorsed a commission to supervise the countries that signed this accord. This inspection occurs every five years. It is therefore of utmost importance that this surveillance occurs, but still there are countries that have not signed the NPT, the are: Iran, India, Pakistan and more recently North Korea, which is no longer a member of NPT.

Many countries are reinforcing a culture of nonproliferation. Nuclear powers such as the U.S. and Russia are the leaders which have renewed their global. They are fighting the nuclear threat with measures that aim to limit the use of weapons. Thus, they signed two important agreement in 1972, they are: the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty (ABM). In 2010, they signed the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START). These initiatives are essential for nuclear disarmament. Other initiatives are being taken by emerging powers. Brazil, for example, only uses nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

Global consciousness is an effective way to win the nuclear threat; at a certain point, it is necessary to make the reduction of nuclear warheads in public. The unfolding of these actions is freeing humanity. Social peace depends on the engagement of all countries. The nuclear danger concerns millions of peoples and would cause millions of casualties. Thus, confidence-building is primordial to save the world from this dreadful threat. The future of humanity will only be guaranteed with no use of nuclear weapons.
